Champagne on the Rocks - Malibu

The summer holidays are almost over – the crisp air and grey skies signalling the coming of the autumn months. To close it out, indie-pop duo Champagne on the Rocks’ debut single Malibu reminisces memories of sunny afternoons spent by the pool and sipping cocktails in the evenings.

Tom Wood and Robin Cooper combine warm, funky riffs with an acoustic country twang to create a relatable track that is easy to listen to. Wood’s vocals are uniquely gritty, putting a rock spin on the song. The track begins and ends with recordings taken between takes, with the boys chatting and laughing. From the band’s gig photos, it is easy to hear Malibu accompanying their smiling faces without even being there – the song encapsulates their personalities and is a great first single.

The lyrics are befitting of a summer pop bop and reinforce the dancey rhythms and playful melodies. Wood looks back fondly on a recent holiday and dreams of the next one. Champagne on the Rocks’ paint a picture of ‘blue skies [that last] all night’ in the perfect place to party.

The energy that the two bring to Malibu reflects their positive attitude and passion for music. If you follow Champagne on the Rocks’ Instagram, you will no doubt have seen their jam sessions, cover videos and nights out with friends. Malibu personifies Wood and Cooper’s need to dance and groove, which they share with their listeners, friends and family.
